headphones

i constantly have my minidisc walkman and big headphones with me, whenever i am wandering about between classes. walking to my first class in the morning, walking between classes - even though it only takes approximately 3 minutes, walking back... they're constantly on. i recently graduated from the in-the-ear earbud kind of phones which came with my walkman to my lovely new beyerdynamic dt 231's.

the sound is much better and they're a lot more comfortable, plus they keep my ears warm. the only drawback is that they have a 3m long cord which often gets me tangled up in things and tends to drag behind me, or flap in the wind.

so usually i storm about, as i walk quickly, scowling, looking at the ground, as i usually do, for whatever reason. i'm not seeing what's there, i'm living in the music in my head, i'm at the concert, in the crowd. the people coming towards me, the snow, the trees, the buildings fade away and are replaced with a much more interesting scene.

i'm not always scowling, though. a few days ago i was listening to 'kid a' and it just fitted perfectly - it often fits perfectly, depending on my mood, the time of day, the weather... and so it all came together again, as i was walking to my class, and i had my big headphones on, and i got the usual chills down my back (usual but never becoming dulled by habit) and so i walked with a big smile on my face, feeling invincible, and people were looking at me wondering what the secret is.
